Men's Lacrosse Falls, 19-6, at No. 12 Denison in First Round of NCAA Tournament

5/7/08 -- Widener, championships of the Middle Atlantic Conference, saw its season end with a 19-6 loss at No. 12 Denison in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Granville, OH.
The Big Red (14-2) took control by scoring nine goals in the second quarter for a 13-5 halftime lead. Emmett Jones, Nate Hall and Brady Burton netted two goals apiece in the period.
Senior Brian Stromko (Maplewood, NJ) and sophomore Cory Malampy (Ridley, PA) scored two goals apiece. Seniors Clint Quedenfeld (Chalfont, PA) and Chris Matthews (Drexel Hill, PA) notched one each for the Pride (10-8), who received votes in the recent USILA Coaches Poll.
Jones and Rick Mackessy each scored three times with Tanner Smith dishing three assists for Denison, which notched a 40-33 shots edge.
Widener earned its spot by capturing its fourth straight MAC title and 11th overall, 10-6 last Saturday at Messiah. The 2008 seniors became the third Widener class to win four MAC titles, joining the 1999 and 2000 seniors, and the first to compete in four NCAA Tournaments.
The Pride were making their seventh NCAA Tournament appearance. They had won a first-round game in the NCAA Tournament each of the last two seasons to advance to the “Sweet 16.”
