Lauren Lucci and Tim Collins Named Widener Athletes of the Week
5/6/08 -- Seniors Lauren Lucci (Springfield, PA) and Tim Collins (Yorktown Heights, NY) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
At the Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Lucci won the shot put by covering 14.18 meters and the discus throw at 43.02 meters to raise her MAC championships total to 16. The Mideast Region Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year ended second in the country in the shot put at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
Collins was named the Most Outstanding Player of last week's MAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament, helping the Pride win a fourth straight title. He made four saves in the fourth quarter Saturday at Messiah in the final and yielded only two goals in that run. Collins had 12 saves overall and 18 for the tournament.
Lauren Lucci and Brian Stromko Named Widener Athletes of the Week
4/29/08 -- Seniors Lauren Lucci (Springfield, PA) and Brian Stromko (Maplewood, NJ) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Lucci won the shot put at last week's Penn Relays, defeating several Division I athletes. The three-time All-America and 14-time Middle Atlantic Conference champion closed second in both the shot put and the discus throw at the Lions Invitational.
Stromko closed last week with seven goals, five assists, 12 points and four ground balls. He scored three goals and dished two assists Wednesday in the Pride’s 14-12 loss at Messiah. Stromko had four goals and three assists Saturday in the Pride’s rout of Manhattanville.
Kerri Schulz and Luke Weber Named Widener Athletes of the Week
4/22/08 -- Seniors Kerri Schulz (Philadelphia, PA) and Luke Weber (Lititz, PA) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Schulz closed last week with nine goals, two assists, 11 points, five caused turnovers and four ground balls over two games for lacrosse. She scored five goals Saturday, one shy of her career best, and added two ground balls and two caused turnovers in Widener’s victory at King’s.
Weber scored four goals, dished two assists and added three ground balls Saturday in Widener’s 10-8 victory over King’s. The win helped the Pride clinch a berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament and move into a second-place tie with Lycoming.
Kim Dougherty and Kyle Durham Named Widener Athletes of the Week

4/15/08 -- Sophomore Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) and senior Kyle Durham (Mount Laurel, NJ) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Dougherty went 2-0 last week with seven strikeouts over 12 innings. She permitted just three runs – one earned – and six hits over seven innings Tuesday against Lebanon Valley. Dougherty struck out five over five innings Sunday, yielding two runs and three hits in Widener’s 12-2 victory over Albright.
Durham captured the Lebanon Valley Invitational by shooting a 2-over-par 74 last Monday. He won by two shots in a field of 107 players. Durham's effot helped Widener finish in second place.Mallory Meyer and Tom DeAngelis Named Widener Athletes of the Week

4/8/08 -- Senior Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) and freshman Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
At the plate, Meyer batted .615 (8-for-13) with two doubles, three home runs and five RBI. She went 4-for-4 Wednesday in the first game against Washington (MD), rapping two home runs and adding four RBI in an 8-0 victory. In the circle, Meyer went 2-0 by allowing no runs and six hits over 10 innings with eight strikeouts.
DeAngelis batted .571 (4-for-7) in two games last week, helping Widener split a doubleheader against Albright. In game two, DeAngelis went 3-for-4 with the go-ahead two-run double in a 7-3 victory, extending his hitting streak to 19 games.
Steph Connolly and Matt Fischer Named Widener Athletes of the Week

4/1/08 -- Sophomore Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) and senior Matt Fischer (Bensalem, PA) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Connolly last week closed with eight hits, four home runs and 11 RBI en route to being named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week. She went on a tear Sunday at Lycoming, ending with five hits, three home runs and nine RBI. Connolly blasted two home runs in game one, including a grand slam, and totaled seven RBI in Widener's 12-2 victory.
Fischer last week batted .467 (7-for-15) with a triple, four home runs and 10 RBI. He blasted two homers Tuesday and closed with four RBI in Widener 10-8 victory at Marywood. Fischer went 4-for-10 with two home runs and six RBI in a three-game series against Elizabethtown, extending his career-best hitting streak to 13 games.
Tom DeAngelis Named Widener Athlete of the Week

3/25/08 -- Freshman Tom DeAngelis (Pottstown, PA) was named Widener Athlete of the Week.
DeAngelis batted .600 (6-for-10) with two doubles and four RBI last week, helping Widener to two victories. He rapped four hits Tuesday and collected three RBI, the last being a game-winning 12th-inning single in the Pride’s 7-6 triumph over Gwynedd-Mercy. DeAngelis on Friday closed with two hits, including an RBI in Widener’s 10-2 rout of Swarthmore.
Lauren Lucci and Ryan Walter Named Widener Athletes of the Week

3/18/08 -- Senior All-America Lauren Lucci (Springfield, PA) and junior Ryan Walter (Quakertown, PA) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Lucci closed second in the shot put Saturday at the NCAA Championships for her third All-America nod.
The top-seeded competitor in the field, she finished with a top throw 45’ 11 1/4.” But she was defeated by Monique Riddick of Montclair State, who had a throw of 46’ 4 3/4.”
Walter was tabbed Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Week. He struck out eight over seven innings Saturday against USP, allowing just two unearned runs, five hits and one walk in the Pride’s 9-2 victory.
Lauren Lucci and Nyere Miller Named Widener Athletes of the Week

3/4/08 -- Senior All-America Lauren Lucci (Springfield, PA) and junior Nyere Miller (Washington, DC) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Lucci won her fourth shot put title and third straight weight throw crown en route to being named Field Athlete of the Year at the Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.
She automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put with a league-record toss of 14.65 meters, destroying the previous mark by 0.95 meters. She won the weight throw with a league-record distance of 15.03 meters.
Miller's leadership, hustle and determination last week helped men's basketball win the Commonwealth Conference title and advance to the NCAA Tournament. He scored seven points last Saturday in Widener's 75-61 win over Lycoming in the final, ending the tournament with 15 points and seven steals.
Beth Dessart Mager and Nyere Miller Named Widener Athletes of the Week

2/26/08 -- Juniors Beth Dessart Mager (Newtown Square, PA) and Nyere Miller (Washington, DC) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Dessart Mager closed last week with
34 points, 19 rebounds and shot 12-of-29 from the floor over two games for women's basketball. She had career highs of 27 points and 13 rebounds Saturday as Widener clinched a spot in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a 63-53 win over Elizabethtown. Dessart Mager, who notched her first career double-double, scored 18 points in the second half and made all eight shots.
Miller ended last week with 35 points, eight steals, seven 3-pointers, five rebounds, three assists and shot 12-of-29 from the floor in two games for men's basketball. He was on fire Saturday against Elizabethtown, scoring a career-high 26 points and matching a career best with seven 3-pointers in the Pride’s 84-68 victory. Miller shot 8-of-14 from the field in the contest and scored 16 points in the second half.Nikita Halteman and Jeff Cain Named Widener Athletes of the Week

2/21/08 -- Sophomore Nikita Halteman (Hatfield, PA) and freshman Jeff Cain (Marlton, NJ) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Halteman notched her honor after winning the shot put Saturday at the Susquehanna Open. She posted a throw of 11.89 meters.

Cain took second in the 5,000-meter run in 15:46.16, also at the Susquehanna Open. He is the reigning Middle Atlantic Conference Cross Country Rookie of the Year.
Molly Bendzyn and Kevin Carson Named Widener Athletes of the Week

2/12/08 -- Freshman Molly Bendzyn (Cherry Hill, NJ) and senior Kevin Carson (Saint Peters, PA) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Bendzyn last weekend won three times at the Middle Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships.
She grabbed the 400-yard IM in 4:47.98, the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.57 and the 200-yard backstroke in a school-record 2:12.25. Bendzyn also was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that set a school record by closing second in 1:54.90.
Carson ended his conference career by winning six gold medals last weekend. He won the 200-yard butterfly for the fourth time in this meet and captured the 100-yard butterfly in a new school and MAC record. Carson also was part of the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay, 400-yard freestyle relay and 800-yard freestyle relay.
Megan Sipple and Nyere Miller Named Widener Athletes of the Week

2/5/08 -- Juniors Megan Sipple (Boothwyn, PA) and Nyere Miller (Washington, DC) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Sipple had 32 points, four rebounds and 10 steals last week for women's basketball. She had 21 points and seven steals last Wednesday at Lebanon Valley and 11 points Saturday vs. Messiah.

Miller ended last week with 22 points and once again gave the men's basketball team solid leadership. He scored 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting Saturday against Messiah in a 72-50 victory.
Tyla Conicello and Jesse Bregman Named Widener Athletes of the Week

1/29/08 -- Sophomore Tyla Conicello (West Conshohocken, PA) and freshman Jesse Bregman (Oreland, PA) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Conicello had five first-place finishes in six races for swimming last weekend. Against Lebanon Valley on Friday, she won the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relay. Against Elizabethtown on Saturday, Conicello won the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 25.98 seconds and also the 400-yard medley relay.
Bregman had four first-place finishes in six races last weekend, also for swimming. Against Lebanon Valley, he closed first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.93 for the best time in MAC this year and also finished first in 200-yard freestyle relay. Bregman won the 400-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay at Elizabethtown.
Elin Berlin and Jesse Bregman Named Widener Athletes of the Week

1/22/08 -- Sophomore Elin Berlin (Wayne, PA) and freshman Jesse Bregman (Oreland, PA) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Berlin posted season-best times Saturday against Delaware. She closed first in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:41.78 and third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.88.
Bregman ended third at Delaware in the 100-yard freestyle at 48.91 seconds, ranking him first in the Middle Atlantic Conference for the season. He also anchored the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay squad with a team-fastest split of 21.78 seconds.
Lauren Lucci and Bobby Edmunds Named Widener Athletes of the Week

1/15/08 -- Senior All-America Lauren Lucci (Springfield, PA) and sophomore Bobby Edmunds (Linwood, NJ) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Lucci last Saturday grabbed the weight throw with a toss of 13.61 meters at the Delaware Winter Invitational. She also took the shot put by covering 12.05 meters.
Edmunds finished with a career-high 20 points and was 3-of-3 from 3-point range in men's basketball's 80-70 victory over Neumann last Tuesday. Rayne Reber and Nyere Miller Named Widener Athletes of the Week

12/18/07 -- Sophomore Rayne Reber (Pottstown, PA) and junior Nyere Miller (Washington, DC) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Reber last week ended with 27 points, 19 rebounds and four 3-pointers in leading the women's basketball team (6-3) to two victories. The 2007 Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year has been named to the league's weekly honor roll each of the last two weeks.
Miller had 11 points, five rebounds and three 3-pointers last Friday for men's basketball (10-1) in a 75-55 triumph at Wilkes. He also added two steals and an assist over 28 minutes.
Lauren Lucci and Matt Slomiany Named Widener Athletes of the Week

12/12/07 -- Senior Lauren Lucci (Springfield, PA) and sophomore Matt Slomiany (Lansdale, PA) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Lucci last Friday won the shot put at the Jack Pyrah Invitational in Haverford, PA with a meet-record-toss of 13.89 meters. She also closed in fourth place in the weight throw at 14.15 meters.

Slomiany
took the 200-yard IM in 2:04.34, the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:18.36 and also was part of the 400-yard medley relay squad for the men's swimming team last Friday against Villanova.
Molly Bendzyn and Matt Slomiany Named Widener Athletes of the Week

12/5/07 -- Freshman Molly Bendzyn (Cherry Hill, NJ) and sophomore Matt Slomiany (Lansdale, PA) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Bendzyn won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:17.53 against Washington (MD) on November 27. She ended third in the 400-yard IM in 4:55.00 and fourth in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:14.98 at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational last weekend.

Slomiany captured the 200-yard IM in 2:02.87 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:58.95 in Widener's victory over Washington (MD). He ended third in the 400-yard IM in 4:24.30 and fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:37.48 at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational.
Barbara Fleming and Charles Jones Named Widener Athletes of the Week

11/26/07 -- Juniors Barbara Fleming (Philadelphia, PA) and Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Fleming enjoyed a monster outing Saturday for women's basketball, scoring a career-high 26 points on 7-of-11 shooting in Widener’s 63-55 victory over Neumann.
Fleming, who poured in 17 points in the second half, also ended the game with eight rebounds, four steals, an assist and a block. She was named to the Commonwealth Conference Honor Roll.

Jones was tabbed MVP of the Gallaudet Holiday Tournament last weekend, closing with 31 points and eight rebounds for men's basketball. He has scored in double figures the last three games and is sixth in the conference with 13.8 points per contest. Jones for his effort was named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week.
Stacey Vaitis and Jeff Cain Named Widener Athletes of the Week

10/29/07 -- Senior Stacey Vaitis (Lansdale, PA) and freshman Jeff Cain (Marlton, NJ) were named Widener Athletes of the Week.
Vaitis had another solid effort on defense for women's soccer as Widener permitted just one goal over two critical conference games. Her effort this year has helped the Pride notch 10 shutouts and advance to the Commonwealth Conference Tournament a second straight year.

Cain was tabbed Middle Atlantic Conference Cross Country Rookie of the Year. This came after finishing 10th in 28:25.97 at the MAC Championships, helping the men's team close in fifth place.
Kim Brady and Mike Falkenstein Named Widener Athletes of the Week

10/22/07 -- Seniors Kim Brady and Mike Falkenstein have been tabbed Widener Athletes of the Week.
Brady last week finished with 37 kills, a .292 hitting percentage and five blocks as volleyball went 2-1. She had a .400 hitting percentage Tuesday as the Pride clinched a berth in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Lycoming. Brady had 15 kills in a 3-1 victory Saturday over Swarthmore before notching 13 in a 3-1 loss later that day to FDU-Florham.
Falkenstein had 11 receptions for 177 yards and a touchdown Friday in football's 23-3 victory over FDU-Florham. His 21-yard touchdown catch midway through the second quarter gave Widener a 10-3 lead. On the first drive of the second half, he had two catches for 25 yards that helped set up a field goal for a 16-3 lead.
Sam Baer and Brian James Named Widener Athletes of the Week

10/8/07 -- Sophomore Sam Baer and freshman Brian James have been tabbed Widener Athletes of the Week.
Baer scored a pair of game-winning goals last week for women's soccer (10-2-1, 1-0 CC). Her goal in the 56th minute Wednesday gave Widener a 2-1 victory over Rutgers-Camden. Baer netted her Commonwealth Conference-leading 14th goal of the season Saturday in the 20th minute in a 1-0 triumph at Lycoming.
James ended last week with two goals and an assist for five points. No goal was bigger than his tally in the 102nd minute of men's soccer's 1-0 double-overtime victory at Lycoming in the conference opener for both schools. James also had a goal and an assist Tuesday in Widener’s 10-0 win over Penn State Abington.
