Caitlin Callahan Named CoSIDA Third Team Softball Academic All-District

5/9/08 -- Widener sophomore outfielder Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) has been named third team CoSIDA Third Team Softball Academic All-District.

Callahan, also named second team All-Commonwealth Conference, was one of five in the league with a 1.000 fielding percentage and one of four on the squad who played at least 40 games.  She ended third on the team with a .343 batting average, fifth with 35 hits, sixth with six doubles, fifth with 23 RBI and tied for first with seven stolen bases.

Callahan also was fourth on the team with 10 multi-hit games and fourth with seven multi-RBI contests.  This included a four-RBI game April 15 against Arcadia and a three-hit contest April 19 at Elizabethtown.

Owner of a 3.792 GPA in Nursing, Callahan last year was tabbed an All-America Scholar-Athlete by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Widener (30-12, 9-1 CC) notched the most victories in school history and closed in a tie for the regular-season conference title.  The Pride made their initial appearance in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament and first in any league tournament since 2000 (Middle Atlantic Conference).

 

Mallory Meyer Named Commonwealth Conference Softball Player of the Year, Highlighting Four Selected First Team All-League; Three Tabbed Second Team All-Conference

5/5/08 -- Widener senior pitcher/shortstop Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) was named the Commonwealth Conference Softball Player of the Year, one of seven on the squad to be honored for all-league awards.

Sophomore pitcher Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ), sophomore utility player Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) and junior third baseman Stephanie Caulford (Vineland, NJ) were tabbed first team all-league.  Junior first baseman Krista Cesarine (Ridley Park, PA), sophomore outfielder Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) and junior designated player Rachel O’Leary (Coatesville, PA) were named second team all-conference.

Meyer enjoyed another standout year as one of the league’s dominant players.  She earned her initial first-team honor after being named second team all-league each of the last two years.

In the circle, Meyer posted a 12-7 record that included a seven-game winning streak midway through the year.  She is fourth in the league with a 2.03 ERA, fourth with a .227 opposing batting average, second with 113 2/3 innings pitched, fifth with 81 strikeouts and second with 12 wins.

At the plate, Meyer was just as dominant as she is first in the conference with 51 hits.  She is second on the team with a .354 batting average, second with nine doubles, tied for first with five home runs and third with 28 RBI.

Dougherty also was a force in the circle, ending with an 11-3 record that included an eight-game winning streak.  She is third in the league with a 1.79 ERA, fifth with a .233 opposing batting average, fifth with 98 innings pitched, third with 11 wins and second on the team with 60 strikeouts.

Caulford is fourth in the conference with a .426 on-base percentage.  She is sixth on the team with a .328 batting average, fourth with 39 hits, fifth with seven doubles and fourth with 25 RBI.

Connolly, who played both shortstop and designated player, is third in the league with a .363 batting average, tied for second with 34 RBI, tied for third with 10 doubles and third on the team with 41 hits.

Cesarine had another strong campaign after being named first team all-league each of the last two years.  The 2006 Conference Rookie of the Year is fifth in the league with 30 RBI, first with 11 doubles, sixth on the team with a .333 batting average, second on the squad with 30 RBI and owner of a .982 fielding percentage.

Callahan, in her first year as a full-time starter, was one of five in the conference with a 1.000 fielding percentage.  She is third on the team with a .343 batting average, fifth with 35 hits, sixth with six doubles, fifth with 23 RBI and tied for first with seven stolen bases.

O’Leary, one year after being selected first team all-league, is eighth on the team with a .314 batting average, sixth with 32 hits, tied for third with nine doubles and sixth with 16 RBI.

Meyer, Dougherty, Caulford and Callahan last year were named All-America Scholar-Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Mallory Meyer Named Commonwealth Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week

4/28/08 -- Widener senior Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA), who continues to put up big numbers both at the plate and in the circle, today was named Commonwealth Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week.

Meyer batted .571 (8-for-14) over four games with a double and three RBI, raising her hitting streak to eight games.  In game two Wednesday at Neumann, she went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the Pride’s 9-0 victory.

On the pitching rubber, Meyer notched two victories last week.  She struck out nine over five scoreless innings and yielded just two hits at Neumann.  Meyer on Saturday struck out three over seven innings as Widener topped Messiah to clinch a share of the conference regular-season title.

It has been another exception campaign for Meyer, named second team all-conference each of the last two seasons.  She is first in the league with 50 hits, fourth with a 2.03 ERA, fourth with a .223 opponents batting average, second with 106 2/3 innings pitched, fifth with 76 strikeouts and tied for first with 12 victories (12-6).  Meyer has won 11 of her last 14 decisions.

Meyer last year was tabbed an All-America Scholar-Athlete by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and also is a two-time member of the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Widener (30-10, 9-1 CC) this season set a school record for most victories, in addition to tying Lebanon Valley for the league’s top mark.  The program notched its seventh 20-win season in school history.

Widener is the number two seed for the conference tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker.  The squad opens play Friday against third-seeded Elizabethtown at 1:00 pm, following the opener between Lebanon Valley and Messiah at 11:00 am.

The double-elimination tournament takes place on the campus of Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA.  The champion earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

 

Meg Phillips Named Commonwealth Conference Softball Player of the Week

4/14/08 -- Widener freshman second baseman/outfielder Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) today was named Commonwealth Conference Softball Player of the Week.

Phillips batted .462 (6-for-13) last week with two doubles, a triple and five RBI.  She had two doubles Tuesday against Lebanon Valley in Widener’s dramatic 4-3 victory.  The latter just missed being a two-out walk-off grand slam by less than five feet, making it a 3-2 game before senior Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) lined the winning two-run single.

She also had two RBI on Wednesday in the Pride’s 11-2 triumph at Wesley and an RBI on Sunday in a doubleheader sweep of Albright.

Phillips is sixth on the team with 13 RBI and also has four doubles and 17 hits.

The doubleheader sweep of Albright puts Widener (21-9, 5-1 CC) in a three-way tie for first place and in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament for the first time.  The event takes place May 2-3 at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA and will be the team’s first league tournament since the 2000 Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament.

The squad also clinched its seventh 20-win season in school history, all under coach Fred Dohrmann.

Widener on Tuesday hosts Arcadia, beginning at 5:00 pm.


Mallory Meyer Named Commonwealth Conference Softball Player of the Week

4/7/08 -- Widener senior Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) had a phenomenal week both at the plate and in the circle, and was rewarded by being named Commonwealth Conference Softball Player of the Week.

At the plate, Meyer batted .615 (8-for-13) with two doubles, three home runs and five RBI.  She went 4-for-4 Wednesday in the first game against Washington (MD), rapping two home runs and adding four RBI in an 8-0 victory.  She also went 3-for-5 with a double and a home run in a doubleheader sweep Thursday of Eastern.

In the circle, Meyer went 2-0 by allowing no runs and six hits over 10 innings.  She struck out eight, including five in game one against Washington (MD), and allowed only five walks.

Meyer, who was named the league’s Pitcher of the Week on March 17, has been on a tear this season.  The two-time second-team all-conference player is tied for first in the league with five home runs, first with eight wins, tied for fourth with 29 hits, fifth with a 2.04 ERA, third with a .208 opposing batting average and tied for fourth with 43 strikeouts.

Meyer also owns a nine-game hitting streak, during which she is batting .455 (15-for-33) with seven RBI.  She also has won her last seven outings and is 8-3 this season.

Her effort has helped Widener (17-7, 2-0 CC) notch seven straight victories on top of a six-game winning streak earlier this year.  The Pride last Thursday swept Eastern and held their initiative to “Strike Out Cancer.” The team wore special pink t-shirts to mark the occasion, sold the same t-shirts and held a bake sale with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Widener on Tuesday hosts Lebanon Valley in a conference doubleheader, beginning at 4:00 pm.

 

Steph Connolly Named Commonwealth Conference Softball Player of the Week

3/31/08 -- Widener sophomore Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) has been named Commonwealth Conference Softball Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Connolly had a monster week, closing with eight hits, four home runs and 11 RBI.  She went on a tear Sunday at Lycoming, ending with five hits, three home runs and nine RBI.  Connolly blasted two home runs in game one, including a grand slam, and totaled seven RBI in the Pride’s 12-2 victory.

Connolly leads the conference with 23 RBI, is tied for first with four home runs and is third with a .648 slugging percentage.  She is second on the team with a .389 batting average, tied for second with 21 hits, first with eight multi-hit games and first with five multi-RBI contests.

Her effort has helped the Pride (13-7, 2-0 CC) to victories in 10 of their last 12 games.

Widener invites everyone to help “Strike Out Cancer” during its home doubleheader Tuesday against Eastern at 5:00 pm.  Fans are asked to wear pink to support the cause and donations will be collected for the American Cancer Society.

 

Steph Connolly and Mallory Meyer Tabbed For Commonwealth Conference Softball Weekly Honors

3/17/08 -- Widener sophomore Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) was picked Commonwealth Conference Softball Player of the Week and senior Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) was named the league’s Pitcher of the Week.

Connolly batted .500 (9-for-18) last week with two doubles and six RBI.  No RBI was bigger than in game two Saturday against Juniata, a ninth-single game-winning single that lifted Widener to a 3-2 victory.

She had three RBI on Wednesday against Cabrini in game one as part of a doubleheader in which she went 4-for-7 with four RBI.  Connolly leads the league with 12 RBI and is tied for fourth with 13 hits.

Meyer notched two victories last week, recording eight strikeouts and allowing just one run over 11 innings.  She struck out three over four scoreless innings Tuesday against Chestnut Hill in a 7-2 win and notched five strikeouts Saturday in a 2-1 victory over Juniata.

Named second team all-league the last two seasons, Meyer is tied for second in the conference with three wins and third with 31 2/3 innings pitched.

Widener (9-5) has won six straight games.  The squad is home Thursday against Haverford, beginning at 4:00 pm.

 

Seven For Softball Named NFCA All-American Scholar-Athletes

10/31/07 -- Seven players for Widener were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athletes.

The team consists of players who have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average through the spring semester.

On the list is junior Carli Saraullo (Somerdale, NJ), who sports a 3.941 GPA in Nursing and was named the Middle Atlantic Conference winner of the NCAA Sportsmanship Award.  Stephanie Caulford (Vineland, NJ) sports a 3.489 GPA in Accounting after being picked to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team and fellow junior Trina Menta (Broomall, PA) owns a 3.968 GPA in Accounting.

Senior Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) has a 3.369 GPA in Physical Therapy and sophomore Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) owns a 3.830 GPA in Nursing.  Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) has a 3.667 GPA in Hospitality Management and fellow sophomore Elizabeth Kohan (Downingtown, PA) sports a 3.564 GPA in Nursing.

The Pride after last spring owned the 49th best GPA in the country according to the NFCA for reporting Division III schools.  Widener ended with a 3.232 GPA last season for the third best GPA among Middle Atlantic Conference schools behind Lebanon Valley and King’s.

10/4/07 -- Widener’s softball team posted the 49th-best GPA in the country according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for reporting Division III schools.

Widener ended with a 3.232 GPA last season, one year after closing with the 37th-best mark in the nation.  It was the third best GPA among Middle Atlantic Conference schools behind Lebanon Valley and King’s.

The team academically is highlighted by junior Stephanie Caulford (Vineland, NJ), who made the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team with a 3.752 GPA in Accounting.  Also a standout is junior Carli Saraullo (Somerdale, NJ), the MAC winner of the NCAA Sportsmanship award and owner of a 3.941 GPA in Nursing.

Widener ended last season 23-15.

 

Softball's Carli Saraullo Named Middle Atlantic Conference Winner of the NCAA Sportsmanship Award

9/24/07 -- Widener junior Carli Saraullo (Somerdale, NJ) has been tabbed the Middle Atlantic Conference winner of the NCAA Sportsmanship Award.

A two-year player on the softball team, Saraullo won the award based on the Association’s “desire to promote sportsmanship and ethical behavior and the highest ideals of respect, caring, civility, fairness, honesty, integrity and responsibility the NCAA recognizes.”

One of the school’s top student-athletes, Saraullo sports a 3.941 GPA in Nursing.  She notched a 4.0 GPA her first semester and last spring was selected to the MAC Academic Honor Roll.

Saraullo makes her presence known on campus, helping with other nursing students in assisting them study for tests and serving as an honors mentor for incoming current freshmen.  This semester she will take part with Healthy Living, a group which helps other students in learning how to take better care of their bodies.

She also volunteered at Lauren’s House, a day care center for physically and mentally disabled children.  Saraullo is working to becoming a nurse’s aid to help relieve some of the stress from the current nurses in the hospital.  She helps with Widener’s drug and alcohol coalition program and also donates food and clothes to Christian Ministries and the end of each semester.

Widener ended the season 23-15.
