Mallory Meyer and Matt Fischer Named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performers of the Year for Softball and Baseball, Respectively
7/7/08 -- Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) was named the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Softball Performer of the Year and fellow senior Matt Fischer (Bensalem, PA) earned the same honor for baseball.
Also being named to their respective all-area teams for the spring are senior Lauren Lucci (Springfield, PA) for women’s track & field, senior Luke Weber (Lititz, PA) for men’s lacrosse, sophomore Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) for softball and sophomore James Green (Lansdale, PA) for men’s track & field.
Meyer was a force every time she took the field at pitcher and shortstop and deservedly was named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year. The owner of a 3.456 GPA in Physical Therapy finally was picked first team all-league after being tabbed second team each of the last two years. Meyer, who led the league with 51 hits and notched a 12-7 record in the circle, helped Widener (30-12, 9-1 CC) share the regular-season conference title.
Fischer, one of the top defensive catchers and a tremendous all-around leader, was picked first team all-conference for baseball. In posting a 3.658 GPA in History & Secondary Education, Fisher played a key role in the Pride (26-14, 5-7) notching at least 20 wins a fourth straight year. A three-time second team honoree, he ended third in the league with a .409 batting average
Lucci graduates in grand style after becoming the school’s first female NCAA champion, winning the shot put at 14.43 meters. A three-time selection academic all-area selection, Lucci is a four-time All-America and won 16 Middle Atlantic Conference titles. This winter, she was named Mideast Region Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Lucci sports a 3.207 GPA in Environmental Science.
Weber also is a three-time pick after being named his sport’s Performer of the Year in 2006. The 2008 MAC Men’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete and second team CoSIDA Academic All-District pick a third consecutive year notched a 3.849 GPA in Government and Politics. In helping Widener (10-8, 5-2 MAC) win a fourth straight conference title, Weber finished the season with 19 goals and 22 assists at midfield in being tabbed first team All-MAC.
Callahan was picked third team CoSIDA Academic All-District and second team all-conference with a 3.792 GPA in Nursing. The all-star outfielder closed third on the team with a .343 batting average and was one of five in the league with a 1.000 fielding percentage.
Green ended his year by being named the MAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Year, winning the shot put at 15.09 meters and the javelin throw at 58.20 meters during the conference championships. Green, who owns a 3.333 GPA in Criminal Justice, also was the MAC indoor champion in the shot put at 14.74 meters.
Two players of the year in one season is a record for the Pride since the teams were initiated in 2005-06. Six all-area student-athletes in one season are the most since Widener notched seven in the spring of 2006.
Jaime Carr (Norristown, PA) was picked the Academic All-Area Field Hockey Performer of the Year during the fall.
Seven Widener Student-Athletes Named to Inaugural MAC Spring Sportsmanship Team
5/27/08 -- Seven student-athletes for Widener University were named to the inaugural Middle Atlantic Conference Spring Sportsmanship Team.
These athletes are senior Tristan Harner (Palm, PA) from baseball, junior Krista Cesarine (Ridley, PA) from softball, senior Tim Collins (Yorktown Heights, NY) from men’s lacrosse, sophomore Brittany Dippolito (Pennsauken, NJ) from women’s lacrosse, senior Kevin Klick (Lansdowne, PA) from men’s track & field, senior Jenny Steiner (Royersford, PA) from women’s track & field and senior Kyle Durham (Mount Laurel, NJ) from golf.
The teams include a player from each squad in the conference who demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship through their actions on and off the field during the season.
Harner had another standout season in which he was named second team All-Commonwealth Conference. He led the league with 72 innings, was tied for second with six wins, fifth with two saves and tied for third with 16 appearances. Harner finished with a 6-3 record, 31 strikeouts and a 4.00 ERA for Widener (26-14, 5-7 CC).
Cesarine was tabbed second team All-Commonwealth Conference, helping the Pride (30-12, 9-1 CC) win the regular-season league title. The 2006 Conference Rookie of the Year and first-team pick the last two years closed fifth in the league with 30 RBI, first with 11 doubles, sixth on the team with a .333 batting average, second on the squad with 30 RBI and owned of a .982 fielding percentage.
Collins helped the Pride (10-8, 5-2 MAC) to a fourth straight conference title and was named the MAC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, ending with 18 saves over two games. He finished fifth in the league with 10.18 saves per game and also had a .518 save percentage.
Dippolito helped the Pride’s resurgence in playing 15 games with four starts. She closed the year with nine goals, one assist, 15 ground balls, seven draw controls and five caused turnovers.
Klick won the MAC Indoor pole vault title at 4.4 meters and holds the school record in both in indoor and outdoor pole vault. He was named to the Dean’s List five semesters.
Steiner was part of the women’s team that finished a school-best second at this year MAC Outdoor Championships. On the indoor scene, she closed second in the pole vault at the Haverford Quad-Meet and third in the pole vault at the Keogh Invitational in Haverford.
Durham this year won the Lebanon Valley Spring Invitational in a field of 107 and captured two quad-matches. He ended with a 79.8 average this season, finishing tied for 12th at the Commonwealth Conference Championship.
Luke Weber and Jaime Carr Named CoSIDA Second Team At-Large Academic All-District
5/22/08 -- Senior men’s lacrosse standout Luke Weber (Lititz, PA) and senior field hockey all-star Jaime Carr (Norristown, PA) were named CoSIDA second team At-Large Academic All-District.
Weber, who notched this honor a third straight year, enjoyed yet another strong season in which he was named first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference and the league’s Men’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete. He is seventh in the league with 22 assists, fifth on the team with 19 goals and third with 41 points. Weber also notched 34 ground balls and won 51 percent (97-of-190) of his face-offs.
His efforts helped Widener (10-8, 5-2 MAC) win a fourth straight MAC championship, the school’s 11th in 13 years, and make its seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Pride won at Lycoming and Messiah in the tournament, marking the second straight year they captured two road games to claim the title.
Weber is a three-time Honorable Mention Preseason All-America according to Inside Lacrosse Magazine. In 2007, he was named second team all-league and a member of the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. Weber was picked the 2006 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men’s Lacrosse Performer of the Year after being tabbed first team All-MAC. He also was the 2005 MAC Rookie of the Year and a first team All-MAC honoree.
A three-year member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll, Weber owns a 3.849 GPA in Government and Politics.
Carr, who had a point in 13 games this year, graduates as Widener’s all-time leader with 60 goals and 136 points. This season, she paced the conference with 20 goals and 46 points one year after being selected first team all-league. The Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Field Hockey Player of the Year ended fifth in the country with 1.18 goals per game and 2.71 points per contest.
The Pride (12-5) reached double figures in victories a school-record fifth straight season, playing in the competitive Commonwealth Conference which features two ranked teams (Messiah and Lebanon Valley). The seniors graduate having notched a 46-22 record (.676), just beating last year’s graduating class for the best winning percentage over a four-year span (46-23 / .667).
Carr in 2006 was picked first team All-Commonwealth Conference and second team All-South Atlantic Region.
She owns a 3.71 GPA in Government & Politics and is a three-time member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll.
This brings Widener’s 2007-08 total of Academic All-District student-athletes to eight. Seniors Rachel Chizmadia (Saline, MI) and Becky Rohrbaugh (Railroad, PA) each were named second team All-Americas for volleyball and first team All-District.
Senior Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ) was named first team all-district for men’s basketball, seniors Jamie Schild (Fairport, NY) and Robert McHugh (Philadelphia, PA) each were second team for football and sophomore Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) was third team for softball.
Widener University Sees 36 of its Student-Athletes Named to Middle Atlantic Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll
5/20/08 -- Widener University had 36 of its student-athletes selected to the Middle Atlantic Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll.
The list includes 10 student-athletes from the softball team and nine from the men’s track & field squad. Widener finished tied for third with King’s College for the most honorees in the league.
Among the highlights include senior Luke Weber (Lititz, PA), who was named the MAC Men’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete. Sophomore Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) was tabbed third team CoSIDA Academic All-District for softball.
Senior Lauren Lucci (Springfield, PA), a three-time All-America in Track & Field and the Mideast Region Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, made the list after raising her conference championship total to 16. Widener Sees 23 of its Student-Athletes Named to MAC Winter Academic Honor Roll
3/19/08 -- Widener University had 23 of its student-athletes selected to the Middle Atlantic Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll.
The list includes 13 student-athletes from the track & field teams, five from the basketball squads and five from the swimming teams.
Among the highlights include junior Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ), named CoSIDA first team Academic All-District for the men’s basketball team. He sports a 3.912 GPA in Civil Engineering, which included a 4.0 last fall.
Junior Tracy Jones (Indian Head, MD) also made it from the Commonwealth Conference champion men’s basketball team. Shawn McDevitt (Drexel Hill, PA) and fellow junior Kevin Muldoon (Philadelphia, PA) were honored from the Middle Atlantic Conference champion men’s swimming team.

Six Widener Student-Athletes Named to Inaugural MAC Winter Sportsmanship Teams
3/18/08 -- Six student-athletes for Widener University were named to the inaugural Middle Atlantic Conference Winter Sportsmanship Teams.
These athletes are junior Tracy Jones (Indian Head, MD) from men’s basketball, sophomore Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) from women’s basketball, senior Tyler Jones (Hagerstown, MD) from men’s track & field, senior Amber Bennick (Jim Thorpe, PA) from women’s track & field, senior Pete Fischer (Huntingdon Valley, PA) from men’s swimming and sophomore Katie Hahn (Thorofare, NJ) from women’s swimming.
The teams include a player from each squad in the conference who demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship through their actions on and off the field during the season.
Jones is a co-captain, helping the Pride with his leadership and willingness to make everyone around him better. He played 27 games this season, leading Widener (23-6, 6-4 CC) to its second straight Commonwealth Conference title and third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Jones has helped the Pride to five NCAA Tournament victories during his time.
Tyler took a major step this year at center and was named second team All-Commonwealth Conference. She ended 19th in the league with 8.1 points per game, second with 7.7 rebounds per contest and second with 3.16 offensive rebounds per game. This helped Widener (11-15) clinch a spot in the conference tournament before falling to Final Four participant Messiah in the semifinals.
Jones has been a major factor this year for the throws team. He placed second in the shot put at the Lebanon Valley Invitational by covering 13.54 meters and third in the event at the Jack Pyrah Invitational with a toss of 13.66 meters.
Coming off her appearance on the national Cross Country/Track & Field All-Academic Honor Roll, Bennick continued to impress as one of the Pride’s top distance runners. She will be a major factor during the spring, especially in early May at the MAC Outdoor Championships.
Fischer graduates having led Widener to three straight MAC championships. At this year’s event, he won one individual title and two relay crowns. Fischer captured the 50-yard freestyle and was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay.
Hahn’s success this season certainly spells a bright future for the Pride. Three times this season she was a member of winning 200-yard freestyle relay teams (Rowan Cup, FDU-Florham, Delaware) and she helped the women close fifth at the MAC Championships.
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Spreads Holiday Cheer to Local Elementary School
12/14/07 -- Members of Widener University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) on Thursday spent time giving gifts and spreading holiday cheer to many youngsters at a local elementary school.
Students from kindergarten through second grade at Stetser Elementary School in Chester, PA were the recipients of toys in addition to receiving a visit from Santa Claus. Among the Widener student-athletes on hand were Nicole Pappas (Cherry Hill, NJ), Justin Upp (Camden, DE), Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA), Kim Farina (Riverside, NJ) and Krista Cesarine (Ridley Park, PA).
Members of Widener's SAAC also helped wrap gifts earlier in the week. Among those student-athletes were Pappas, Cesarine, Steph Connolly (Aston, PA), Trina Menta (Broomall, PA), Colleen Sullivan (Elkridge, MD) and Jamie Schmucker (Holmes, PA).
This marks the fourth straight year Widener’s SAAC has visited a local elementary school. The toys were donated to the SAAC by student-athletes, administrators and fans of Widener athletics.
The events are part of the SAAC’s on-going commitment to keeping in touch with the local community. It is one of the signature events outside of athletic competition for the SAAC, run by softball coach Fred Dohrmann, women’s lacrosse coach Robin Baxter and women’s soccer coach Brian Sheehan.
Widener’s SAAC has made an invigorating effort toward working with community projects and building leadership through athletics and the University. The SAAC also plays an active role outside the University, participating in events with other schools in the Middle Atlantic Conference to offer input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes' lives.
Widener University last fall had two of its student-athletes named CoSIDA Academic All-Americas and 53 make the MAC Academic Honor Roll. In 2006-07, the University saw eight student-athletes make the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Teams.


Jaime Carr Named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Field Hockey Performer of the Year; Six Others Picked For All-Area Teams
12/10/07 -- Widener’s Jaime Carr (Norristown, PA) was tabbed Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Field Hockey Performer of the Year and six others were selected to their respective Academic All-Area teams.
The list also includes seniors Rachel Chizmadia (Saline, MI), Becky Rohrbaugh (Railroad, PA) and Kim Brady (Pottstown, PA) from volleyball, seniors Robert McHugh (Philadelphia, PA) and Jamie Schild (Fairport, NY) from football, and junior Doug Gabel (Feasterville, PA) from men’s soccer.
Carr owns a 3.71 GPA in Government and Politics. The second team All-Commonwealth Conference pick had a point in 13 games this year and graduates as Widener’s all-time leader with 60 goals and 136 points. This season, she paced the conference with 20 goals and 46 points. Carr is fifth in the country with 1.18 goals per game and 2.71 points per contest.
It is Carr’s second selection to the All-Area Team.
Chizmadia sports a 4.0 GPA in Communication Studies, is a three-time member of the Academic All-Area Team and this year was tabbed second team CoSIDA Academic All-America. She closed the season second on the squad with 3.22 digs per game and fourth with 1.65 kills per game. Chizmadia finished her career ninth in school history with 532 kills and seventh with 922 digs.
Rohrbaugh also owns a 4.0 GPA and also was a first team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. One the league’s top setters, the Elementary Education/Early Childhood major is fourth in the conference with 10.06 assists per game after closing seventh and fifth, respectively, the previous two years. She closes her career second in school history with 2,862 assists.
Brady was picked third team CoSIDA Academic All-District, possession a 3.885 GPA in Hospitality Management. Twice notching a 4.0 GPA during her time, the standout middle hitter is fifth in the league with a .241 hitting percentage and third with 3.34 kills per game. She also was second on the team with 70 blocks and first with 53 solos blocks.
McHugh was picked second team CoSIDA Academic All-District in a year which he was third in the Middle Atlantic Conference with a 37.6 yards-per-punt average over 73 kicks. He has placed 28 punts inside the 20 yard line and 10 inside the five yard line. McHugh graduated with a 3.756 GPA in Criminal Justice and is going for his Master’s in the same field.
It is McHugh’s second consecutive selection to the All-Area Team.
Schild, a first team CoSIDA Academic All-America with baseball in 2005, also was tabbed second team CoSIDA Academic All-District with a 3.552 GPA in Civil Engineering. He ended with 34 catches for 321 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Pride (8-3, 7-0) win their first outright MAC title since 2001 and compete in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since that season.
Gabel ended his season with four goals and an assist for nine points. He was one of four for the Pride to start all 18 games and owns a 3.52 GPA in Physical Therapy. Gabel also had a game-winning goal, scoring in overtime of the season opener against Kings Point.

12/6/07 -- Seven student-athletes for Widener University were named to the inaugural Middle Atlantic Conference Fall Sportsmanship Teams.
These athletes are senior Jamie Schild (Fairport, NY) from football, sophomore Marty Squicciarini (Lansdale, PA) from men’s soccer, sophomore Casey LeRoy (Washington Twp., NJ) from women’s soccer, junior Trina Menta (Broomall, PA) from field hockey, junior Meghan Fitzsimmons (Lancaster, NY) from volleyball, senior Steve Altobelli (Southampton, PA) from men’s cross country and senior Amber Bennick (Jim Thorpe, PA) from women’s cross country.
The teams include a player from each squad in the conference who demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship through their actions on and off the field during the season. All seven student-athletes for Widener also were named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll.
Schild, a wide receiver, was tabbed second team CoSIDA Academic All-District in helping Widener (8-3, 7-0 MAC) win the MAC title and advance to the NCAA Tournament. The 2005 CoSIDA first team Academic All-America with baseball ended with 34 receptions for 321 yards and three touchdowns.
Squicciarini enjoyed another solid year in his second season as starting goalkeeper. He was fourth in the Commonwealth Conference with a 1.55 goals-against average, sixth with a .707 save percentage, tied for third with four shutouts and fourth with 3.61 saves per game.
LeRoy was one of four for the Pride to start all 21 games at midfield, giving the team a strong presence on both offense and defense. Her effort helped Widener (14-6-1, 3-2) compete in the ECAC South Tournament and the Commonwealth Conference Tournament a second straight year.
Menta gave Widener (12-5) valuable minutes at midfield, helping the team reach double figures in victories a school-record fifth straight year. She played in 16 games this season with nine starts and also is a two-year letterwinner on the softball team.
Fitzsimmons last year was one of five on the volleyball team who notched a 4.0 GPA in at least one semester. She closed the season with 1.31 kills per game, 2.40 digs per game, 24 blocks and 14 aces for the Pride, who advanced to the Commonwealth Conference Tournament for the first time since 1999.
Altobelli finished the MAC championships 43rd in 30:25.49 and had a personal-best finish this season of 35th place in 20:44 at the Belmont Classic.
Bennick posted another strong year, capping it by closing 50th at the NCAA Mideast Regionals in 23:26. She also was seventh at the MAC Championships in 25:07.68 and eighth at the Belmont Classic.

Among the highlights include seniors Rachel Chizmadia (Saline, MI) and Becky Rohrbaugh (Railroad, PA) from the volleyball team. Both were named first team CoSIDA Academic All-District with a 4.0 GPA.

The football team held its day in the home opener September 14 against Wesley.
Chase Frost is a Widener nursing student who received first and second-degree burns over 50 percent of his body recently while fighting a fire. A four-year member of the Parkside Fire Department, he also works with the Eddystone and Norwood Fire Departments and the Marple Township Ambulance Corps.
Widener Head Athletic Trainer A.J. Duffy to Receive Dr. Donald Grover Memorial Award From ECAC
9/25/07 -- Widener head athletic trainer A.J. Duffy III MS, ATC, PT on Sunday will be awarded the Dr. Donald Grover Memorial Award from the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The award will be given as part of the ECAC Honors Dinner in Cape Cod, MA. The honor is endowed by the family of Dr. Grover and was established to annually honor an athletics trainer and/or team physician at an ECAC member institution who has achieved outstanding success in his or her career and has made a significant contribution in the interest of intercollegiate athletics.
Duffy is in his 18th year as Widener’s head athletic trainer and 25th as a full-time athletic trainer. Prior to being named the head athletic trainer at Widener in 1990, he served as an assistant at Temple University from 1981-83 and the University of Michigan from 1984-90. In addition to his responsibilities at Widener, Duffy also serves as the clinical coordinator of clinical education for athletic training students at Temple, West Chester University and Neumann College.
In the three decades that Duffy has been in athletic training, he has served in executive roles for various associations including his current position of president in the Pennsylvania Athletic Training Society (PATS) since 2002, the secretary of PATS (1993-1997) and president of the Eastern Athletic Training Association (EATA) (1997-2003).
The 1980 University of Michigan alum was the winner of the 2005 Ted Quedenfeld Award for outstanding athletic training service in the greater Philadelphia area. He won the Cramer Award, the EATAs most prestigious honor, and was presented the Joseph A. Blankowitsch Award as the EATA president in 2003. The National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) in 2002 selected him as the Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer and he was given the Interboro Education Association Volunteer Award that year for dedicated service to the local school district.
Having worked in two U.S. Olympic Festivals and over 20 Penn Relays, Duffy has been actively involved in many different endeavors. He serves on the Widener University Golf Outing Committee and on the athletic department's wing of the University's Strategic Plan Committee. He has assisted in the course review and admissions for the university's new Physical Therapy program. He also has helped fundraise for Voices for Children, an organization that helps children affected by HIV and AIDS, in addition to being a member of the Citizens of Fourth of July Association of Norwood, PA, the nation's oldest such association.
Widener Sees Eight Student-Athletes Named to Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team
7/17/07 -- Widener placed eight of its student-athletes on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team from the 2006-07 school year.
Junior Rachel Chizmadia (Northboro, MA) from the volleyball team led the fall honorees. Owner of a 4.0 GPA, she was tabbed first team CoSIDA Academic All-District after being named third team in 2005.
Junior Jaime Carr (Norristown, PA), a first team All-Commonwealth Conference and second team all-region pick, was honored from field hockey. Junior Robert McHugh (Philadelphia, PA) was tabbed second team Academic All-District from the football squad.
Sophomore Shawn McDevitt (Drexel Hill, PA) was picked from swimming. He was a part of two winning relay teams at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships, helping Widener capture its second straight crown.
